Global changes are transforming species interactions dramatically, yet how this translates into predator recruitment is unclear. In fast-shifting ecosystems, such challenge is even more acute. Here we quantified shifting predator abundance and breeding probabilities during three decades at 400 sites across the Arctic, where climate warming is the highest. We show that all generalist predators maintained a high recruitment. However, microtine specialists experienced contrasting outcomes, with pomarine jaegers halving their recruitment and snowy owls increasing their breeding probability by more than 10 times on average during average years of microtine abundance. Furthermore, increasing temperatures at the start of breeding only benefitted specialist predators recruiting in the northernmost latitudes. Thus,
predator responses to global change may not always be advantageous and could complicate ecosystem forecasting.
