To assess the influence of feeding conditions on the survival and abundance of shrews, an analysis of the relationships between the population dynamics of Sorex caecutiens and Sorex isodon and the relative biomass of ground invertebrates was carried out. The study was conducted in typical (larch forest) and intrazonal (floodplain Chozenia forest) habitats. In both habitats, the relative biomass of invertebrates at the end of summer was inversely related to the number of shrews. The number of overwintered shrews in larch forests was positively correlated with the biomass of invertebrates at the end of the previous summer. In the Chozenia forest, such a relationship was not established, but due to floods and aufeis ice, this habitat is unsuitable for small mammals in the winter-spring period. The results of the study suggest a fairly high interdependence of the dynamics of the abundance of shrews and invertebrates in relatively unproductive northern ecosystems.
