An important parameter characterizing the soil is biological activity, consisting of the interaction of living organisms of the soil with each other and the products of their vital activity. Biological activity, consisting of respiratory and enzymatic activity, gives an idea of the state of the soil. The activity of catalase, invertase, urease, as well as the intensity of basal respiration and the carbon content of microbial biomass were studied. All soils are characterized by a decrease in the activity of catalase, invertase down the profile, which is associated with a decrease in the content of water-soluble carbon. The change in the urease profile is not unambiguous and characterized by «average» activity. The intensity of basal respiration and the carbon content of microbial biomass decreases down the profile. A close relationship was obtained between basal respiration and microbial biomass carbon. Microbial biomass carbon correlates with the carbon content of water-soluble compounds.
