The predatory Asian harlequin ladybird Harmonia axyridis is an effective regulator of insect pests of agricultural plants. It has been widely introduced worldwide, but has become a threat to the biodiversity of native entomofauna. To assess its ability to colonize areas with cold winters, we determined the cold-hardiness of wintering adults of H. axyridis from a population near the northern bound of its native range (Khabarovsk Krai). Its supercooling point (SCP) was determined and compared with data from other populations. H. axyridis cannot withstand freezing and survives negative temperatures only in the state of supercooling. The average SCP in the Khabarovsk population was 16.1±0.6°C. It is significantly higher than the temperatures above the snow level recorded here. Obviously, the survival of H. axyridis in winter in cold regions may be facilitated by the presence of shelters with favorable microclimate or wintering in litter under snow cover than by the cold-hardiness of the species.
