Number of the long-distance migratory waders of the East Asian-Australasian flyway are declining rapidly. The main cause is active reclamation of mudflats at key migration stopovers in the Yellow Sea. The decline is rapid and apparently it should be minimized at all stages of the annual cycle. At the beginning of southward migration, a large numbers of long-distance migrants form stopovers on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. A significant part of these species is listed in Red Book of the Russian Federation. At present, however, there are no special protected sites that are designed to protect key migratory stopovers of these species. We suggest creating several special protected sites at the Sea of Okhotsk as the main stopovers for the long-distance migrating waders on the western coast of Kamchatka, on Sakhalin and in the bays of the Khabarovsky krai.
