The behavior of fish protecting offspring is the most accessible for studying in natural conditions. The relative stability of behavioral acts and the stationary nature of the process of protecting offspring create opportunities for formalizing of behavior in the form of an algorithm. Based on the analysis of video information about the protection of offspring by male lumpfish of the Barents Sea, an algorithm has been developed, its cyclic structure has been determined, and the main structural elements have been identified. The algorithm operators that «switch» the behavior of fish depending on environmental conditions are highlighted: the speed of currents, the presence of predators. The formalization of the entire period of the male lumpfish protective behavior is supposed to be performed by introducing an abstract model of a finite automaton, the “clock cycle” for which will be one cycle of the described algorithm.
