The formation of vegetation in the place of Pinus pumila thickets destroyed by a large fire that occurred on Zavyalov Island in 2009 is considered. Re-establishment of the vegetation cover started from the stage of open postfire communities of pioneer mosses and grasses, which lasted for 2-3 years. There was active spreading of dwarf pine seeds by animals. Due to underground organs survived from the fire, shrubs such as Middendorf’s birch, birch-leaved spirea and vegetatively regenerating shrubs (primarily cowberry) quickly started to grow. In the following period, dense sodding of mosses, mainly of Polytrichum, restraining the regeneration of dwarf pine shrubbery occurred over a large part of the burned area.
