For the first time, a search for potentially toxigenic cyanobacteria was carried out in the Belokholunitsky and Omutninsky reservoirs of the Kirov region, used for cultural, domestic and recreational purposes, using molecular genetic approaches. In the summer phytoplankton of the studied reservoirs, 54 species were identified, including 15 species of cyanobacteria. Successful amplification of sections of the mcyE and anaC genes in «planktonic» DNA samples confirmed the presence in water of cyanobacteria that are dangerous to humans, potentially capable of producing microcystins and anatoxin-a. The likely producers of cyanotoxins in the studied reservoirs may be cyanobacteria of the genera Microcystis, Dolichospermum, Aphanizomenon and Cuspidothrix, found in all surveyed areas of the reservoirs. Genetic markers for the production of cylindrospermopsin and saxitoxins were not detected in water samples from the
studied reservoirs.
