The St. Anna Trough, located in the Kara Sea, is a region with a complex hydrophysical system where several warm flows from the North Atlantic Ocean are interacted. The bacterial communities of various water masses in the St. Anna’s Trough are poorly studied. Thus, using 16S metagenomics, significant differences between the microbiomes of water masses were shown in this region. Complexity of the composition of bacterioplankton communities increased with depth.
Arctic water masses were enriched with Flavobacteriaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, and Halieaceae compared to Atlantic water masses. In contrast, SAR324 was more abundant in Atlantic water masses. Besides, the samples taken at the boundaries of water masses were discovered to be highly heterogeneous, which likely indicates an active mixing in these regions.
