The mallard and eastern spot-billed duck are two common waterfowl species in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, dominant wintering duck species in Shanghai City, and excellent host species of AIV. To improve wildlife management mechanisms, we started a GPS tracking program of these two species in Shanghai. The spatial behavior during wintering seasons and migration was studied based on 18 spot-billed ducks and 11 mallards during 2017–2021. We found that the Northeastern Area, including Northeastern China, the Korean Peninsula, and the southern part of Far East Russia, is a crucial intersection of migratory ducks in Northeast Asia. We also suggested that, according to the different habitat use patterns, functions of the two duck species during the transmission of AIV should be differentiated, especially for zoonosis prevention purposes in heavily urbanized areas.
