Kolguev Island has an exceptionally high abundance of nesting geese, with White-fronted goose used to be the most numerous. In the recent decade, Barnacle geese have rivalled in numbers, expanding throughout the inland and occupying a wide variety of nesting habitats. Therefore, the two species may compete by using the same habitats for nesting, rearing goslings, and moulting. We analyzed the breeding density and nesting success of the species in different parts of the island. In 2006–2023, the nesting density of White-fronted goose decreased in the Peschanka Delta area, while there was an upward trend in the central part of the island. Spatial analysis of the nest locations of the two species on the same study plot showed that White-fronted geese tended to nest more distant from Barnacle goose nests
than randomly. This corroborates the hypothesis that the dispersal of Barnacle goose throughout the island may lead to a competition with White-fronted goose.
